Have you ever tried to send a large file through email and have either your server or your recipient’s server choke and refuse to send? Most servers have a limit set to prevent large files from dominating the server’s resources. The organization I work for (1200+ employees) recently switched to Microsoft Exchange, and we have such a limit in place now on attachments (we did not before). A few employees have a legitimate business need to send rather large files; uh oh - we have a problem now.
Enter DropSend, by Carson Systems. If you’ve never used DropSend, check it out. It’s an easy to use online service for sending very large attachments. Create an account, compose your email through the DropSend interface as you would a regular email, and upload your attachment. Click send, and your recipient will receive an email with your message, and a link to download the file (up to 5 times over 7 days). You even get a notice when your recipient downloads your email (nice touch).
The dilemma of the employees with the need to send large files came up in a planning meeting today, and I remembered DropSend. I’d heard about it before, but never used it myself. I tried it out after the meeting and loved it, but that’s an easy sell. The harder sell was the network manager, who while being very much an “I.T. Guy” is not necessary a “Web 2.0″ enthusiast.
I didn’t have to explain a thing. I gave him the address to DropSend and started to talk about it, but he wanted to click around instead. In less than a minute he had a free account and was sending a test file of about 200 MB to himself. A few minutes later, he was emailing the aforementioned employees the solution to their problem.
I did little here, and that’s the point: I didn’t have to. DropSend was self explanatory, and it worked, and I was happy, because network manager was happy and employees were happy. Kudos to Carson Systems for a great product.
P.S. Not a paid review, just a pleased user.
